Laden von LiPo-Akkus: Heute wirklich trivial?
Charging LiPo packs: Really trivial today?

Zuerst die gute Nachricht: Niemand ist schwerer verletzt worden. Die Bilder unten haben uns kürzlich von unserem "HeliGraphix Swiss Unit" erreicht. Aus nicht mehr klar rekonstruierbarer Ursache hat ein LiPo-Akku (Markenhersteller!) unmittelbar nach Beendigung des Ladevorgangs Feuer gefangen und vom Rücksitz aus das Auto in Brand gesetzt. Die ganze Aktion ist so schnell abgelaufen, daß trotz sofortiger Bemühungen am Ende nur mehr die Feuerwehr den Brand unter Kontrolle bekam.

Das Fazit für uns alle lautet:

(1) Obwohl die LiPo-Technik weit fortgeschritten und im allgemeinen sicher ist, birgt sie ein Gefahrenpotential, das man nicht übersehen darf.

(2) Laden auf feuerfester Unterlage und das Entfernen von entflammbaren Gegenständen in der Umgebung sind obligatorisch.

(3) Ein geeigneter und ausreichend dimensionierter Feuerlöscher gehört in unmittelbare Reichweite Ihres Laders.

(4) NIE ohne Aufsicht LiPo-Akkus laden. Wie das aktuelle Beispiel zeigt, gerät eine Gefahrensituation binnen Sekunden außer Kontrolle!

First the good news: Nobody got hurt seriously. The pictures below have been submitted to us by our "HeliGraphix Swiss Unit". A LiPo battery pack of a well-established manufacturer caught fire right after charging was finished; the cause cannot be reconstructed with certainty. The charger and battery pack were lying on the back seat and set the car on fire within just a few seconds. In fact, things happened so fast that only the fire department got the situation under control.

Bottom line for all of us is:

(1) Even though LiPo technology is quite advanced and generally safe, it involves dangers one mustn't overlook.

(2) It is mandatory to charge on a fireproof base and to remove all inflammable objects in the vicinity.

(3) A suitable and sufficiently dimensioned fire extinguisher needs to be in reach.

(4) NEVER charge LiPo batteries unattended. Like the current example shows, a dangerous situation gets out of control within seconds!
