+++ Mission: Philippines +++

With "half a ton" of high-tech equipment we once again embarked on a totally insane trip, this time to Southeast Asia!

 

 

 

 

Unanstrengend war unser kurzer Abstecher nach Südostasien zwar ganz sicher nicht, aber mit Stränden, Sand und Meer könnte man uns andererseits auch nicht locken. Stattdessen sind wir unter merklichem Zeitdruck durch die Gegend gerast und haben unser möglichstes getan, das scheinbar Unmögliche eben doch Realität werden zu lassen. Wie von früheren Missionen gewohnt, mussten wir uns also beständig mit Behörden, Polizei, Sicherheitsdiensten und einmal auch der philippinischen Armee auseinandersetzen. Letztendlich stets mit Erfolg – worüber wir uns zugegebenermaßen selber ein klein wenig wundern. Aber manchmal ist das Glück eben mit den "Verrückten" … :-)

If there is one thing that our latest quick trip to Southeast Asia was not, then it is relaxing. But on the other hand, we certainly aren't the type of person who gets excited about beach, sand and sun. Instead, we rushed through the country with a lot of time pressure and did our very best to turn the seemingly impossible into a reality. Like on other missions before we had to negotiate constantly with authorities, police, security and in one case even the Philippine Army. In the end all of our attempts were successful – and yes, we're a little bit surprised about that as well! But as they say – fortune favours the insane … :-)

 

Wie kommt es eigentlich, dass wir in allen Ländern ständig
Polizei, Armee und Wachdienste am Hals haben?! Zum Glück
sind viele davon cool drauf, wenn man den richtigen Ton trifft … :-)
Why is it that wherever we go, we are always lumbered with police,
army or some kind of security?! Luckily, many of them are pretty
cool once you strike the right note … :-)

Ja, es wird sie geben: Im Spätjahr 2009 erscheinen die
"Philippines Scenic Flights" mit einer wunderbaren
Mischung der beeindruckendsten Ecken des Landes.
Yes, in late 2009 there will be "Philippines Scenic Flights"
showing some of the most impressive corners of the
country in a fabulous mix.

 

 

Für "Scenic Flights" haben wir teils entlegene Winkel des Landes
besucht – und sind auf interessante Menschen gestoßen.
For "Scenic Flights" we have partly visited remote parts of the
country – and were impressed by the helpful and friendly people.

[Super-Stunt 1: The Airplane Hitchhiker

 

Womöglich ist es die technisch aufwendigste Stunt-Aktion, die wir jemals durchgeführt haben: Tobias "2fast 2furious" Wagner sitzt in einer Cessna, die mit über 100 Sachen im Tiefflug über die Landebahn rauscht. Dort wartet im Failsafe-Mode ein 10s T-Rex 600 (Freakware); im Gegensatz zu 35 oder 72 MHz reicht eine 2,4 GHz-Verbindung unter diesen Bedingungen nur rund 300 – 400 m. Der Heli muss also innerhalb weniger Sekunden auf volle 3D-Drehzahl hochtouren, ohne umzukippen. Und dann kommt das Meisterstück: Der fliegende Start! Aus 35 m Höhe, durch die vergilbten und welligen Scheiben der Cessna, Vibration, Lärm, Hitze im Cockpit, ist der Rex auf der Startbahn praktisch nicht zu erkennen. Aber es gibt nur den einen Versuch, denn das Zeitfenster ist eng – für diesen Super-Stunt wurde extra der unmittelbar benachbarte internationale Flughafen gesperrt und eine Überfluggenehmigung erteilt. ABSOLUTER WAHNSINN?! Mit Sicherheit mehr als das …

Und dann: Start geglückt, Cessna und Rex beschleunigen und steigen, um das RADAR und die Airport-Funkfeuer sowie Hochspannungsleitungen nach Möglichkeit zu verfehlen. Doch die gute Frage lautet: Hält der Heli unter diesen klimatischen Bedingungen das Dauer-Vollgas auf der geplanten 5 km Speed-Runde durch (bei 3D gibt es ja stets Belastungswechsel), oder brennt die Kiste im Flug ab? Reicht der Akku überhaupt? Und schließlich: Lässt sich der Heli bei einem weiteren tiefen Überflug auch wieder on-the-fly landen?!?

It may well be the technically most demanding stunt action we have ever done: Tobias "2fast 2furious" Wagner is onboard a Cessna roaring low and with 100 kph over the runway; on the asphalt sits a 10s T-Rex 600 (Freakware) in failsafe mode. Contrary to 35 or 72 MHz the range of 2.4 GHz is only 300 – 400 m under such conditions; in other words, there is only very few seconds to rev up the rotor to full 3D head speed, and the model of course mustn't tip over. And then comes the masterpiece: The flying start! From a height of 35 m, with lots of noise, vibration and heat in the cockpit, and when looking through the yellowed and not exactly plane windows of the Cessna the heli on the runway is almost impossible to spot. But there is only this one attempt, because the time window for this super-stunt is very limited: The adjacent international airport has been closed down and permission to fly over has been granted. TOTALLY INSANE?! Certainly more than that …

And then: Flying start successful, Cessna and Rex speed up and climb in order to avoid hitting the huge airport RADAR and the locator masts. But the really interesting question is: Will the heli make it through the 5 km high-speed round? During 3D flying there are always load changes and thus short breaks for the ESC, motor and battery, but in this case the machine's constantly flying at full throttle. So will the crate start burning in the air, and will the battery last? Last but not least, can you possible land during another low fly-over?!?

Nein, viel Platz gibt es im Cockpit ganz bestimmt nicht! Wenn
sich die Maschine in die Kurve legt, muss der Heli vor oder hinter
der Tragfläche fliegen, sonst ist die Sicht blockiert!
No, there is really not much space in the cockpit! When the
plane goes into the curve, the heli needs to fly in front or behind
the wing – else it will be out of sight (blocked view)!

 

 

Vor allem von der technischen Seite her ist der Stunt unheimlich
komplex, die Zahl der Einflussfaktoren ist schwer überschaubar.
Neben Trockenübungen wurde auch ein Probeflug ohne Heli
durchgeführt, um wichtige Parameter zu ermitteln. Bei Fehlern
wird die Geschichte nämlich leider schnell lebensgefährlich.
Especially from a technical point of view the stunt is really complex;
the influencing factors are numerous, and it's a challenge to keep
the overview. We did a couple of dry exercises as well as a test
flight without R/C heli in order to determine important parameters.
Mistakes and surprises must be avoided as they may easily kill you.

Rey und Blue sind beides exzellente Piloten (bemannte Flugzeuge!).
Blue flog die Verfolgungs-Cessna, während Rey für das Pickup-
Manöver des R/C-Helis wirklich ans Limit ging: Wir hatten einige
Warnmeldung für Strömungsabrisse … ziemlich cooles Gefühl, an
Bord eines Flugzeugs zu sitzen, das kurz vor dem Einschlag steht.
These are Rey and Blue, both are excellent full-size aircraft
pilots. While Blue flew the chase plane, Rey really challenged the
limits during the low fly-over for picking up the R/C heli: We tried
to go extra slow and had a couple of stall warnings … it's a cool
feeling to sit in a plane which is really close to crashing.

[Super-Stunt 2: Jeepney Action

 

Man kann sich vorstellen, dass der "Airplane Hitchhiker"-Stunt, der ja die zeitweise Sperrung eines internationalen Flughafens zur Voraussetzung hatte, etliches an Zeit und Ressourcen aufgefressen hat. Dennoch ist dieser Stunt nicht der einzige geblieben: Wir haben vor Ort einen Autobahnzubringer sperren lassen und sind mit zwei Jeepneys (eine spezielle Art von Bus) und einem Van die Piste hinuntergebrannt. Ziel? Auf dem Bus bei voller Fahrt zu landen, bevor die Hochspannungsleitungen und die Brücke der begrenzt langen Strecke den Heli aus der Luft sägen! It's not surprising that the "Airplane Hitchhiker" stunt has eaten up a lot of time and resources – after all it required an international airport be shut down for a while. And yet, this wasn't the only stunt we performed: We had the feeder road of a motorway closed and rushed down the street with two Jeepneys (that's a special type of bus) and a van. The aim? To land on the bus while driving at full speed, and before the high voltage lines and the bridge at the end of the road would turn the helicopter into a piece of scrap! pit stop with Philippine crew.

des Landes. Wer weiß, ob dies nicht der Grundstein
für den nächsten Heli-Club ist … :-)
